This flat tin candle holder measures 4” x 2 ¼” and has soldered seams. It also has the soldered finger hole. It has a nice aged untouched patina. During the Civil War, most households had several of these candle holders, and no doubt soldiers would bring one with them when they went off to war. The small size made it ideal to carry in a backpack or haversack.
In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I go into detail about the use of candles and candlesticks, and just how important they were for every soldier (see pictures). It would go great with a display of a soldier’s personal items.
