Civil War CDV, Wife at home with children, cat (SOLD)

Being offered is one of a collection of Civil War era “Novelty” CDVs I recently acquired. This one is titled “Home Treasures”. It shows a young mother in a rocking chair holding a newborn, with another very young child holding a rattle gazing at the new sibling. A kitten lays on the floor near the family. The back is blank.

With the Civil War occupying the minds of the nation, a sense of melancholy and nostalgia was a feeling not only among the soldiers far away, but the loved ones at home. These inexpensive cards were popular because they touched on the simple pleasures and scenes that seemed to be replaced by the war.

With the absence of the father, this CDV would suggest that he was probably a soldier away serving the country. Receiving this card from home or purchasing it from a camp sutler, would let the soldier remember what he had waiting for him upon his return. However, sometimes they would have the opposite effect by making the soldier homesick. (FREE SHIPPING)
