Civil War Cavalry saber, made by “P.D.L”

$685.00

Product Description

This is another nice Civil War piece being offered, it is a saber made by the famous Peter Daniel Lüneschloss Waffen-Fabrik (P.D.L.) company. It measures 29 ½” overall with a 24” blade, iron hilt and a wooden handle (never wrapped, but solid).

The Peter Daniel Lüneschloss Waffen-Fabrik (P.D.L.) company was founded in 1810. It originally began as a cutlery manufacturer but started the production of edged weapons in 1848. During the Civil War, Lüneschloss supplied edged weapons to both Federal and Confederate forces. The company began producing bayonets in 1860. The Roman helmet and sword trademark was registered by Carl Lüneschloss on September 15, 1864.

Sabers, including those with detachable hangers, were definitely used in the Civil War, primarily by cavalry, though often more as a status symbol or last resort with the primary weapons being carbines and revolvers. Union cavalry was issued standard sabers like the Model 1860 Light Cavalry Sabre, and innovations like the detachable "J.E.B. Stuart" hanger were even adopted by the U.S. Army for easier access, showing their continued relevance.

Overall, it is a very solid Civil War sword, only having an age crack in the wood handle, but tight. The "P.D.L." mark is found on the blade's ricasso (the flat part of the blade near the hilt). It would make a great addition to any Civil War collection.
