Being offered is a Model 1840 Civil War N.C.O. sword. These swords were carried by Federal non-commissioned officers as a sign of authority in the ranks. Sword is approximately 39” long and has a leather scabbard. There is a spot where it was professionally repaired. It has a 32” long straight sword blade
The ricasso bears a typically “by Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee, Mass” stamp on one side and “U.S. / H.D.H. / 1864” on the other. The H.D.H. was the initials of the inspector Henry D. Hastings. The brass hilt features a simulated wire-wrap grip, a double shell-style guard, and a single-branch knuckle bow.
As I mentioned, the black leather scabbard has a repair but nicely done. There is moderate crazing to the surface finish. Edge tooling on one side and fitted with a brass drag and throat. The brass belt hook remains in place on the brass throat.
Overall, this is a great looking NCO sword with a mirror-bright blade. This would make a great addition to any Civil War or sword collection.
