Product Description

This is a rare Civil War era CDV being offered, it is an image of a young girl seated at a pump organ. The backmark of the photograph is “W.F. Larrabee / Photograph Artist, Fortress Monroe, Va.” Also, there is a Federal Spread Eagle.

Fort Monroe is in Hampton Roads, Virginia, on the Peninsula overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. It was the only federal military installation in the Upper South to remain under United States control throughout the Civil War. Early in the war, the fort became an outpost of freedom within the Confederacy when Union commanders used it to house refugee slaves. The fort also headquartered the Union Department of Virginia and North Carolina, and several significant military campaigns and combined operations were launched from the installation. Most notably, it served as the staging area for General George B. McClellan's ill-fated Peninsula Campaign of 1862.

This image was taken by the famous Civil War photographer W.F. Larrabee sometime between 1862 – 1865. The young woman pictured at the organ was probably the wife or daughter of a Union officer. Musical instruments in Civil War photographs are quite rare and desirable. The card is in great condition, very clear with no creases or being trimmed.
