This is another nice piece being offered, it is a circa 1862 – 1863 CDV of Lee in his Confederate uniform with his beard slightly obscuring the general’s rank on his collar. In period pencil on the bottom of the image is “Fitz Hue Lee”. Fitzhugh also served as Governor of Virginia.
During the Gettysburg Campaign Fitz Lee accompanied Stuart on his controversial eight-day ride around the Army of the Potomac before arriving at Gettysburg. This deprived Robert E. Lee of mobile reconnaissance support during his invasion of Pennsylvania (see Gettysburg monument pic).
In the 19th century it was very popular to have photographs pasted in albums, especially dignitaries, generals, actors, and politicians. The back of the card has remnants of where it was originally pasted in an album. This is a rare Confederate image and in nice condition with good contrast and clarity.
