This is a CDV image of Colonel Henry Wilson. It is the typical size of 2 1/2" x 4" and has no backmark. In 1861 he raised and commanded the Twenty-second Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The 22d, known as the "Henry Wilson Regiment", was raised through the personal efforts of Senator Henry Wilson of Massachusetts who served as its first colonel. It was organized at Camp Schouler, Lynnfield, the nucleus of the regiment being the Woburn Company which was originally recruited for the 19th Regt. and which had been mustered into the service August 10.
The first of the companies actually recruited for the 22d Regt., Co. "A", arrived at Lynnfield Sept. 2. The companies were mustered in on various dates during the month of September, the company officers Oct. 1st and the band Oct. 5th. On Oct. 8, the 22d, with the 2d Company Sharpshooters and 3d Mass. Bat'y attached, preceded to Boston on its way to the seat of war. They reached Washington, D. C. on Oct. 11; and four days later the regiment marched to Hall’s Hill on the Virginia shore of the Potomac, where it was assigned to Martindale's Brigade, Fitz John Porter's Division.
After the war, Wilson was elected Vice President of the United States on the Republican ticket with President Ulysses S. Grant to replace the controversial Schuyler Colfax and served from March 4, 1873, until his death in the United States Capitol Building at Washington, D.C. (see photo of bust in the Capitol). Printed on the bottom of the CDV is “Hon. Henry Wilson”. This rare image is clear and in very nice condition, only a minor mark on the bottom right corner and a bend only obvious from the back. Records of Wilson included. The American History Store has an identical copy of this CDV on their website and it is priced at $599.00. (Free shipping)
