This is another great piece being offered, it is a Civil War 20-pounder Schenkl Shell. recovered from the Brandy Station Virginia Battlefield. While specific records of ammunition types are not always detailed for individual units in every engagement, the 20-pounder rifles would have typically been supplied with Schenkl shells, as well as other types of ammunition.
At the Battle of Brandy Station on June 9, 1863, Union artillery played a key role in supporting the cavalry operations. The 6th New York Independent Battery, also known as “Martin’s Battery”, is thought to be the only battery with 20-pounders at Brandy Station. These rifled cannons were compatible with 20-pounder Schenkl shells, which were known for their accuracy and range, making it very likely that this unit fired this shell.
The battery was part of the artillery reserve of the Union Cavalry Corps and was commanded by Captain Joseph W. Martin. The 20-pounder Parrott rifles they used had the range and firepower necessary to make an impact in the largely open and rolling terrain at Brandy Station, which allowed for long-range artillery engagements. The 6th New York went to fight at Gettysburg after Brandy Station (see monument).
This shell is in very nice condition and the fuse was with it when dug. The shell didn’t explode because of either wet powder or a faulty fuse. It has been coated for preservation and has no chipping or flaking.
