18th century leather fire bucket, as in Mount Vernon and Smithsonian Museum

$475.00

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is an original 18th century leather fire bucket. The bucket measures 14” high (20” with the handle up), 9 ¼” diameter on the top, and 7” diameter on the bottom.

During the18th-century firefighting relied primarily on manual "bucket brigades" and primitive hand-pumped engines, supported by community-wide volunteering. Towns used, axes, hooks, and ladders, with early fire prevention policies (e.g., in London and Boston) focusing on requiring households to keep fire buckets and inspecting chimneys.

As in many societies throughout history, Colonial America had a  complicated relationship with fire. On one hand, it was an important  source of warmth, light, and power. On the other, however, fire could  also pose a significant threat to burgeoning communities throughout the  colonies.

Communities were not often prepared to deal with out-of-control fires.  Homes were typically made out of flammable materials, such as wood. Only  the richest members of society were able to afford homes constructed  out of brick and stone. Even then, many homes were full  of textiles, feed, paper, and other materials that could catch fire.

This bucket is in very nice condition with typical wear as expected and no repairs. There are examples of this bucket at Mount Vernon and the Smithsonian Museum (see pictures). They would also be a necessity at any Revolutionary War fort and were used with the artillery. There is also one on display at the Colonial Williamsburg Museum (see pictures).

Revolutionary War artifacts have always been difficult to find, and I am fortunate to have quite a few pieces in stock. With the upcoming of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding next year, there will be a revitalized interest. Just about all Revolutionary War relics and artifacts will be in demand, which will only add to their scarcity and price. I am already seeing a substantial increase in purchases.

Throughout history, war has been a constant presence, shaping civilizations and societies. From the earliest days of humanity, conflict has persisted in various forms, and based on historical patterns, it is likely to continue in some manner. This ongoing reality has given rise to a deep fascination among historians and collectors who seek to understand the past through the tangible remnants left behind, i.e. uniforms, guns, swords, artillery.

While significant attention is given to weapons and military gear, the everyday items used by soldiers frequently go unnoticed. Simple objects like forks, spoons, cups, dishes, pots, and knives played an essential role in a soldier’s daily life. These items were as precious to the individual as their weapon, serving practical needs and providing comfort amidst the hardships of war. I myself have always appreciated their importance in showing a complete representation of a collection.   Bob
